W telegraficznym – jak to się mówi – skrócie niniejszym informuję, że:
mija właśnie sto dziewięćdziesiąt osiem lat od pewnego wydarzenia, które zmieniło, odmieniło dzieje, zmieniło historię Łodzi – naszego miasta…
Działo się to dnia 27 października 1824 roku.
To właśnie tego dnia doszło do podpisania umowy (kontraktu) pomiędzy prezesem Komisji Województwa Mazowieckiego Rajmundem Rembielińskim a przybyłym z Chemnitz w Saksonii Krystianem Fryderykiem Wendischem.
Urodził się on w 1786 roku w Budziszynie (Saksonia).
Kim był ów przybysz z dalekiego kraju i czego tutaj w naszym mieście w Łodzi szukał? Nie był przybyszem – jak to się mówi – z przypadku. Jak na tamte odległe czasy legitymował się i odpowiednim wykształceniem i zawodowym doświadczeniem. Z zawodu był przędzalnikiem. Do naszego miasta przybył, by zrealizować swoje wielkoprzemysłowe wizje i marzenia. Przybył z kraju, gdzie już od dłuższego czasu przemysł włókienniczy doskonale się rozwijał. Wszyscy to wiemy, że tamta Polska – Królestwo Polskie powstałe po Kongresie Wiedeńskim to dla przybyszów była „terra incognita” ale też kraina, gdzie czas sprzyjał takim doświadczonym zawodowo i odważnym ludziom…
Na mocy owego kontraktu Wendich zobowiązany został do wybudowania fabryki (manufaktury).
By spełnić swoją wizję, swoje marzenie, otrzymał (wieczysta dzierżawa) ziemię (działki) nad brzegami rzeki Jasień (Księży Młyn i Młyn Wójtowski). W niespeła trzy lata, bo już w 1827 roku nad brzegiem wartko płynącej rzeki stanęła ogromna jak na tamte czasy bo trzykondygnacyjna murowana przędzalnia.
Wendisch do napędu maszyn zastosował siłę spiętrzonej i zaprzęgniętej do pracy rzeki. Ten rodzaj napędu nie był mu obcy – znał się i na tym i potrafił w sprzyjających warunkach ze swojej wiedzy korzystać. Wszystko wydawać się mogło, że sprzyja naszemu bohaterowi – wszak niewiele czasu upłynęło a on miał już swoją wymarzoną, tętniącą znojną pracą fabrykę. Z tym umiał sobie radzić jak nikt w ówczesnej Łodzi.
Gorzej było z finansami – na budowę tak wielkiej fabryki (manufaktury) potrzebne były niemałe fundusze. Kredyty rządowe i pożyczki prywatne między innymi od Rembielińskiego w niczym nie pomagały. Nasz bohater zmagał się coraz bardziej z kłopotami finansowymi. To raczej pewne, że właśnie kłopoty finansowe stały się przyczyną przedwczesnej śmierci Krystiana Fryderyka Wendischa od którego rozpoczyna się (można tak stwierdzić) historia fabrykanckiej Łodzi.
Krystian Fryderyk Wendisch zmarł w Łodzi w 1830 roku przeżywszy zaledwie 44 lata.
